Ungrading – Revisited

Workshop Recap

On May 5th, a workshop discussing ungrading and alternative approaches to grading was co-hosted by the Faculties of
Forestry and Science. Examples of ungrading in the classroom were shared, as well as discussions surrounding types of
grading and the concept of ungrading. To learn more, please view the presentation slides and workshop recording, found
here.

More Information

There are currently over 80 members in the UBC Ungrading and Alternative Grading Slack Community of Practice. Join us to
hear about our trials and tribulations, and also ask the community for questions and get feedback on your ideas here.

Ungrading has also been included as part of UBC’s strategic plan for transformative learning (more information can be found here).

Other articles on the topic of ungrading can be found here (anecdotal experience) and
here (academic paper).

Technology Updates

ArcGIS Pro 3.0

Esri will be releasing ArcGIS Pro 3.0. Some of the impacts will be breaking changes, more details can be found here. CBM laptops and UG labs may or may not be
updated to ArcGIS Pro 3.0 due to these breaking changes.

If ArcGIS Pro is not updated to version 3.0 for the 2022-23 academic year (will be updated for the 2023-24 academic year), please disable the option to download software from ArcGIS Online once 3.0 is available. Please also ensure that any links you share to documentation point to the correct version, not the latest version.

If ArcGIS Pro is updated to version 3.0,
the concurrent licensing server for the CBM program and UG labs will need to be revamped, which requires an outage. This will be followed by a seek and destroy mission to update all internal workstations to use ArcGIS Pro 3.0. This step may interrupt current research projects but we will minimize the impact as best as we can.

Zoom Client Update

Please update your Zoom client to the
latest available version (as of May 31, 2022 – 5.10.7).

A mandatory minimum client version of 5.10.0 will be implemented on all UBC licensed Zoom accounts on June
10, 2022 at 11:59pm
. To avoid disruptions, we strongly recommend updating your mobile and desktop clients to the mandatory minimum version prior to June
10.

Funding Updates

Students as Partners Fund

The Students as Partners fund provides grants to encourage student-faculty partnerships in undergraduate course redesign at UBC Vancouver. Faculty and student partners may receive up to $7,100
per project, as well as dedicated support. For further information or to apply, please visit the SAP site here. Please apply by June 15, 2022 at 3pm.

Large TLEF Transformation Funding

The Large TLEF Transformation Funding (up to $1 million) has produced a special call for hybrid and multi-access course
redesign
(details here).

The Large TLEF Projects have a two-stage approval process with a letter of intent (see templates here) due 3 pm on July 14 and full proposals due Oct 13, 2022. A call for Small TLEF Innovation proposals (up to $50,000) will be announced in September
2022
.
