Announcing a Forestry specific Wi-Fi connection for when one is on campus (off campus, use the VPN).
Summary: On May 2nd, Forestry users should start using UBCprivate wi-fi where your CWL username must be formatted as jdoe.frsc. UBCprivate is for laptops, not smartphones, iPads nor other similar devices, these devices should continue to use UBCsecure.
What?
- Starting May 2nd, Forestry’s printers and many of the Forestry license managers will be restricted to UBCprivate. UBCsecure will no longer be able to access these Forestry resources. Note that access to the Faculty shared drive and UBC’s resources (OneDrive/Teams/Canvas/email) are not impacted.
What do I need to do?
-
- Faculty/staff = most, if not all, fac/staff have been bulk loaded in to UBCprivate space. Just tag “.frsc” to the end of your CWL username, e.g., jdoe.frsc.
- Grads = grads can register for access by emailing forestry.ithelp@ubc.ca, cc’ing their supervisor and including their CWL username.
- Forestry visitors = visitors can register for access by emailing forestry.ithelp@ubc.ca, cc’ing their faculty sponsor, with the following information: CWL username and expected end date. Both pieces of information are required or no access will be provided.
What can I add to UBCprivate
- Just laptops, do not add smartphones or iPads. We can see this and will remove your access without notice. Smartphones and iPads should just use UBCsecure. Personal laptops should have UBC AMP anti-virus installed (available here: https://it.ubc.ca/services/desktop-print-services/software-licensing/software-downloads) before using UBCprivate. This is a requirement for any device accessing UBC resources and data.
